Following on from my previous note about "To Leave the Sea" being released, this week we saw the second single from the trip-hop and jazz inspired prokect Trovaire being released. "Oh How Lovely" is actually the first that we wrote, and a personal favourite of mine, mixing the elements of the early 2000s-era Ninja Tune samplephonic breaks with a nod towards artists like Mr Scruff, Coldcut, or the more recent Bonobo.
There's a version of "Oh How Lovely" on the vinyl release that features some slightly different vocals, which is all we can say about that, but the single release that will go on for eternity int he digital domain features the wonderful Kleidi Buroz on vocals.
A happy memory I have of working on this track is doing the engineering and mixing in the "Summerhouse", the nickname we gave one of the studio spaces on the Riverrun farm, and having Dennis drop by to sit on the couch behind me as I worked. I kept thinking he was singing along at one part later in the track, where the layers of harmony vocals kick in. And it turned out that he thought it was me singing, sitting in front of him at the console with my back to him. When it as just a curious acoustic effect of the layers and source material, adding some magic that i still find captivating.
Working with Tony Espie (who mixed The Avalanches albums) helped nudge this away from the more breaks/beats mixes I naturally gravitated towards in the earlier mixes, and dialled in a gentler sound that would go on to define the rest of the album. A track that we love, and now it's out in the world, I hope others do too.
- "Days Like These" is available now on all streaming services including Bandcamp, Spotify, and YouTube.
